How Do I Know If I Need an Oil Change?

It's no secret that the top essential maintenance step you can take to keep your car running smoothly and efficiently is simply getting regular oil changes. You've probably already heard of the three months or 3,000 miles rule, but it's not 100 percent accurate. Some cars can go longer between changes, while some older vehicles or ones with high mileage may need more frequent replacements.

How do you know when it's time to take your vehicle in for an oil change?

CHECK YOUR OIL REGULARLY

We can't emphasize enough how important it is to inspect your oil levels on a regular basis. Oil is necessary to keep your engine running smoothly, and if you don't have enough or it's dirty, the parts aren't getting lubricated. You can sustain severe damage if you don't get it taken care of. To check your oil:

  1. Start by removing the dipstick.
  2. Wipe it on a paper towel or cloth and place it in the reservoir.
  3. Remove it again and inspect it on the dipstick.

THE DASHBOARD LIGHT COMES ON

This indication is simply a no-brainer. If your oil change light is lit, your car is simply communicating to you what it needs.

DECREASE IN FUEL EFFICIENCY

When your oil is aged, it gets thick as it picks up particles and grime from the engine. Thick and sludgy oil is more challenging to move through the engine, causing your car to burn more fuel. Getting new oil in place will allow the lubricant to glide through the moving components more quickly and efficiently.

MORE EXHAUST THAN USUAL

Blue, gray, or even black smoke may be a sign that your vehicle has an oil leak. Do not hesitate to get your oil changed immediately. Our technicians can get to the bottom of the problem and fix it for you.

BURNT OIL SCENT

Similar to excess exhaust, smelling burnt oil is another symptom of an oil leak. The oil drips onto internal components and creates a very pronounced smell. Again, please take it to the repair shop immediately to prevent further damage.

Last but not least, you can always refer to your trusted owner's manual to see the specific time and type of oil your vehicle requires.
