With temperatures warming up here in Texas, it’s time to start thinking about your car’s air conditioning system. Air conditioning is an absolute must in Texas, especially during the hot summer days. In order to ensure you aren’t left without the cooling air that makes driving from point A to point B in the summer bearable, make sure your system is working properly. Many different things that can go wrong with your car’s central air conditioning system, but a few are more common than others. It is easy to take your car’s AC system for granted, that is until you encounter a problem or it all of a sudden stops working on a 100-degree day. While many AC problems are easy to fix, some are more complicated – and costly – than others. The first step to ensuring you aren’t left without AC this summer is to bring your car into our McKinney car shop for regular maintenance. Proper maintenance is the best way to keep everything in excellent working condition, including your AC system. We can perform an AC performance check that will detect any potential problem areas and advise you on what needs to be done before it stops working for good.

Most modern cars have air conditioning, but it is also one of the most overlooked issues. Car owners that fail to properly care for their AC unit will likely be faced with heavy fees in order to get the system fixed or replaced. That is the last thing we want our customers to have to deal with as summer approaches, which is why we thought it would be helpful to look at some of the most common AC repairs. We truly believe that knowledge is power and that by knowing what to look for, you won’t ever find yourself without AC this summer. Here is a look at the most common repairs we see at our McKinney AC repair shop:

  • The air is no longer cooling – One of the most common problems we see with AC units is when the system stops cooling the air. There are many causes of this, including:
    • Low refrigerant level
    • Broken condenser
    • The compressor that is cracked or has a damaged belt, defective clutch, or inactive pressure switches
  • The system is making a strange noise – If you notice an awful sound coming from your vehicle’s AC unit, there’s a good chance you are dealing with a dying compressor. However, it could also be caused by a cross-contaminated refrigerant or the use of the wrong lubricant. Broken parts or holes in the system could also be the source of the problem. If you ever notice a weird noise coming from your AC unit, bring it into Nortex Lube & Tune and have one of our mechanics check it out.
  • The air feels damp inside the car – If you notice moisture inside your car or it feels damp, it could mean there is moisture or debris trapped inside the cooling system.
  • The air smells funky – If you haven’t used your car air conditioning system for a while (which doesn’t happen very often here in Texas!), bacteria, fungus, and other microorganisms can start to grow and cause a funny smell.
  • You notice a leak – Another common problem with AC units are leaks. When the refrigerant starts to leak for whatever reason, it is imperative you bring your car into our McKinney repair shop. Refrigerant is a dangerous chemical that can not only hurt your car’s engine but the environment, too.

Make sure your car’s AC system is in great working condition before the hot summer days hit! Bring your vehicle to Nortex Lube & Tune today for an AC check.
